I liked this book more than any I've read in a long time. The characters were well developed and the story was unique and interesting. The pace is steady throughout the book. There's lots of intrigue in addition to good dialogue and chemistry between characters. The heroine of the story is strong and holds her own in a world of cruel men and a situation nothing in her life prior has prepared her for. I don't enjoy reading about shrinking violet, "rescue me" types and Tikaya is strong, smart and adaptable. I found myself wanting to read the next book immediately.As someone who reads every day, I had to move to kindle books to save room and my sanity. :) I'm often very disappointed by the poor editing of kindle books. I find the typos, missing words, incorrect grammar, etc... really distracting and they take me out of the moment when I'm engrossed in a story. Not only was this book well edited (very few errors) but the language was more complex than many books out now. I even learned a couple of new words and I consider my vocabulary above average! (I'm modest, too.) I recommend this book to fans of fantasy and readers new to the genre.

I grabbed this after reading the author's previous book. It is set in the same world but in a different time frame and environment - which I liked because it gave a sense of richness to the world-building. The book is somewhat hard to describe because it contains several different elements but in many ways it reminds me of early Andre Norton where a less advanced culture comes upon mysterious relics from an alien civilization. Only in this case, the less advanced culture is a right in the middle of the steam age, complete with steam-powered iron ships. And did I mention that there was magic? But somehow, it all works together in a plot that was fast-moving and lots of fun.
I also really liked the characters. How can you resist a heroine who is smart, wears glasses (and really can't see without them), and trips over her own feet? And the hero was kind of a geek - but a very good-looking, competent geek. There was more romance in this than in the previous book but it worked really well. I liked the secondary characters as well and the effort the author put in to showing them as individuals and not just painting them as black or white because of the side they were on. Oh, and the appearance of a young Sicarius was a special treat.
All in all, a very enjoyable read and I look forward to the next book set in this world.
This was a book I didn't know I wanted to read until I picked it up. Which sounds kinda weird, but it made sense when I thought it. Like, I didn't know I wanted a heroine with impressive linguistic skills who is far, far stronger than she gives herself credit for until I started reading about Tikaya. Not only is she wicked smart and able to parse out unknown languages practically in her sleep, she's quick and adaptable and willing to push boundaries to find out answers.
I totally appreciate a lady who does what needs to be done despite her fear and the potential danger to herself.
Surprise allies, hidden betrayal, and one teenage assassin get tangled together to make Tikaya's...err, what do you call it? Her forced deciphering for the enemy? Whatever. Tikaya ends up with a lot on her plate. And that's before the deadly robots make an appearance.
Might I just say, this book could very well be the impetus I needed to start Sicarius's series. The kid intrigued me. Quite a bit.

I tried this book after having become an addict of the author's Emperor's Edge series, and was very pleased. I would classify this as an adventurous fantasy romance novel, but I fear that would be selling it short.
I've read many romance novels in my life. Heck when I was in college, I would sometimes spend my summers reading 3-4 books a day, many of them romances. I have a good idea of what to expect, and at this point much of what I expect is disappointment. I'm way past my college days now and have a very different idea of what makes a good relationship and romance.
Most romance novels I read when I was young were like this - hero and heroine meet, do stuff together, then have a horrible misunderstanding because they just don't talk or truly consider each other's needs. In other words, the majority of all complications in romance plots were poor communication skills and/or jealous immature folks.
(Unrelated romance novel rant - Did you know one of the most popular romance novels of my day had a jealous aggressive hero commit sexual assault upon the heroine and it was considered romantic!? That's insane! I didn't even finish that one, I was so disgusted.)
Thank goodness for the refreshing intelligent breath of fresh air this book was. The hero and heroine treat each other with respect, have good communication skills and know that mature partners don't act out of jealousy, they act out of love. Love for another person means putting their needs ahead of your own, or at the very least on equal footing. There are no uncomfortable misunderstandings, and they act like mature, responsible, intelligent adults. The primary conflict comes from outside the relationship, not within it, as I think it should be.
There's far more adventure than romance here, but the romance is just so well done, I have to give it high praise. Even my husband liked it when he read the book ).
The plot was full of wonderfully fantasy and steampunk elements. It's set in the same universe as her Emperor's Edge books, just several decades earlier. An encryption expert is kidnapped by her enemy's military and is forced to go on a long trek with them to try and decipher an all new language that has been discovered. Imprisoned on the same boat with her, is a mysterious man, who seems as brilliant as she is. Naturally, they are drawn to each other. As more mysteries are uncovered they start to trust each other and work together. But the military is likely to killed them both at the end of the mission, so how will they escape? Can they trust each other enough to plan a way out?
Read it and find out how!
(and yes Sicarius is here, but not as you're used to him - meet teen-Sicarius!)
